Louise Penny: I hardly believe that I say it, but given the continuous threat of unprotected trade war against Canada by the US President, I do not feel that they can enter the United States.
At least not until that economic sword, which could throw hundreds of thousands of Canadians (like Americans) into poverty, completely removed.
There are, of course, other things that the US president does because of the United States visit. Oh, dear. It’s so painful to say that.

I visited friends, befriended, personally and professionally, with so many Americans. I have such respect, affection for them. For you. But … enough. What happens is not just a potential economic disaster for Canada and so many other nations, it is a moral wound.
With that in mind, I’m so sorry to say that until things change, I can’t do personal events in the United States. Which means, for the first time in 20 years, not a tour of the US.
Donald Trump threatens Canada with multiple tariffs
The cancellation of the tour means that Penny will not appear at the Kennedy Arts Center at Washington DC as planned this fall to launch her new book in front of an audience of 2,000 people, a decision first reported by the Washington Post.
Penny said that Soiree would be the highlight of her career, but she withdrew from this performance after Trump fired the entire guardian’s committee and declared herself the President last month.
Ticket sales at the Kennedy Center has fallen since then.
Trump’s trade war and her catastrophic influences on the American economy
Penny’s decision to cancel her tour in the United States has earned broad support on social media out of dozens of Americans and Canadians, who praised her integrity and courage.
Instead, with the support of her publishers, Penny said she would launch a book in Canada, and invited all her US fans to attend the event.
“I decided that instead of launching Black Wolfton, DC at Kennedy Center, I would work an event in the capital of my Ottawa state, at the National Art Center. It will be on Tuesday, October 28,” she wrote.
In the days after the launch of NAC Ottawa, Penny wrote, she will hold other Canadian events to start and promote before she finishes a tour at the library and opera Haskell.
“This is an extraordinary place built in 1904 and sits right on the border between Québec and Vermont. Haskell built both countries as a symbol of our strong friendship relationships, “Penny said.
“It’s a physical reflection of what we believe in. This is what happens political one and transient. What is happening in our hearts is indestructible.”
Penny said she hoped that Americans would come to their Canadian books.
“You will be welcomed with open hands. As friends. As colleagues of three pines. Where there is goodness and decency,” she wrote.
