Bayern Munich midfielder Jamal Musiala is reportedly waiting for a release clause that could make the future easier Exit from the club while negotiations over a new contract continue.
There is a degree of uncertainty surrounding Musiala, as he now enters the final 18 months of a five-year deal he signed back in 2021 – struck when he was not longing to celebrate his 18th birthday and didn’t even have a full season of first-team football under his belt .
The German international, who is now 21 years old, is considered one of the best attacking players in Europe. But the lack of a new contract with Bayern is enough to worry fans of the Bundesliga giants, especially with links to Manchester City underway.
According to Sport BildMusiala and Bayern reached a satisfactory agreement on a new salary package – the player did not ask for a fee that would make him the club’s highest-paid star.
However, the two sides appear to remain at odds over other details, primarily the release clause. The proposal is yes Bayern are absolutely against the inclusion of any such concessions, determined to retain control over the player’s future and sell only if they wish to. For this reason, it is believed that no players in the current squad have release clauses included in their contracts.
For Musiala’s part, the desire is reportedly a €175m (£146m) release clause. That’s not considered a deal breaker, but it would be more important to a player if he wants to sign a five-year deal than a four-year deal. The longer the proposed contract, the more “reasonable” the clause should be.
The asking price is a huge amount, but crucially not an exorbitant amount in the same way that the €1bn (£830m) clauses have thrown out Real Madrid and Barcelona, who are legally obliged to include a buyout in every contract, quite obviously.
Manchester Cityneeding a squad overhaul over the next few transfer windows to replace an aging squad, they could feasibly trigger a €175m release clause for a player like Musiala as he would be the heart of their squad for the next decade. In that scenario, Bayern would be cut out.
It would be a club record transfer for City, but still well short of Neymar’s world record transfer from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 for €222m (£199m).
Musiali is no stranger to life and playing in England. Although born in Stuttgart, he lived briefly in Southampton and later in London between the ages of seven and 16, even representing England at junior international level before returning to Germany.
