X reacts as Liverpool and Man Utd share the spoils in thriller at Anfield
Liverpool vs Manchester United is always a pulse-pounding game.
For fans of these two clubs, it’s arguably the biggest game on their calendars – yes, bigger than the Merseyside and Manchester derbies in football terms – and for neutrals, it’s a game that always has you on the edge of your seat.
The first installment of 2025 certainly lived up to its billing, from the moment the heavens decided to dump a mountain’s worth of snow on the Northwest. There was travel chaos galore and some doubt as to whether the game would actually go ahead – luckily for all those watching in person, at home and around the world, it did.
Here’s how an eventful 90 minutes passed in the world of social media…

Liverpool’s wonderful start to the season owes a lot to the performances of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Virgil and…okay, pretty much everyone who has donned the club’s famous red.
One player the club have really missed in recent weeks, despite maintaining their good form on the pitch, is centre-back Ibrahim Konata. The Frenchman has developed a really strong and effective partnership with Virgil van Dijk, and is seen by many as the catalyst for all the big things happening further down the pitch.
So it was no surprise that Konate’s name was X’s top name when news broke that he would be starting.
Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister have been consistently brilliant for Liverpool, really flourishing under Arne Slot, but Ryan Gravenberch is perhaps the best of the midfield.
The Dutchman was a peripheral figure under Jurgen Klopp, leading many to speculate that his Liverpool career would go nowhere, but his remarkable composure on the ball dazzled throughout the 2024/25 season.
Against United, Gravenberch continued his merry way, producing another superb performance against the duo of Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte – who themselves were far better than they have been at any other point this season.
Ruben Amorim played the first 45 minutes United they made a brilliant switch – stifling Liverpool’s attacking play while creating problems for themselves.
The Reds had chances, yes, with Gakpo scoring after being played in behind, but United more than held their own and looked very capable of capitalizing on a bad day at the back office for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Much of their threat came from the left and they should have taken the lead in the first half through Rasmus Hojlund, but the Dane’s rather weak effort was well saved by Alisson.
Seven minutes into the second half, the incredible hero showed Hojlund how it should be done…
Sloto’s Liverpool haven’t fared very well this season, finding it difficult to break down sides at times. But with the amount of quality they possess, it’s never a surprise when they find their way back through individual quality.
Mac Allister’s brilliant hard pass found Gakpo and the Dutchman once again showed his class by firing a superb effort beyond Andre Onana.
Wherever Matthijs de Ligt goes, handball always follows him.
Unfortunately, that proved to be a fluke again as a stray hand gave Mohamed Salah a chance to score from the spot…
Would Salah keep his cool and maintain his great scoring record against Manchester United?
You probably know the answer to that question…
While Salah is inevitable for LiverpoolUnited fans are starting to feel the same way about Amad Diallo in big games.
The blond famously scored the winner as United beat Liverpool 4-3 in last season’s FA Cup, his last-gasp winner helping the Red Devils secure a famous comeback win over Manchester City just a few weeks ago.
So when Amadou’s chance presented itself after Alejandro Garnacho made more space on the left, there was only one outcome…
The stats will tell you that the game was fairly even – Liverpool overshadowed the game with 19 shots to 13, six on target compared to United’s four.
The Premier League the leader’s xG was also far better than United’s, but it could have been Amorim’s side who walked away with all three points had Harry Maguire not scored from 12 yards with seconds left in the box.
Substitute Joshua Zirkzee looked to be onside as he slotted in behind Andy Robertson, but his cut for Maguire wasn’t the greatest as it bounced towards the England defender. As a result, he couldn’t control his effort, firing high over the bar as the X users gathered their cheeks.
A shooting game that Amorim will take a lot from.
