Jackson and other Democrats suggested the Amendment of Watson’s Law that would enable minors who already receive gender transport treatment to continue to avoid medical and emotional risks stopping in the middle of treatment, but the amendment failed.
Democrat Sens. Elena Parent and Sonya Halpern have reaffirmed their commitment to protect the rights of transgender people, but have pulled out the parties to vote for Robertson’s proposal of the law, saying that they do not believe that taxpayers should be burdened with the cost of treatment for prisoners. The parents suggested an amendment to make an exception for prisoners already undergoing hormone replacement therapy, but this amendment also failed.
“I will not allow my party to withdraw to the argument that made us look in contact with those people we claim to represent,” Halpern said.

Democratic senator Sally Harrell, who has two transgender children, said she wanted to “remind people to talk about very real people – parents, children, families.”
Senator Freddie Powell Sims was a lone Democrat who voted for both of the bills, while four Democrats supported the proposal of a law for prohibiting gender transportation for prisoners.
Last month, the Senate adopted accounts for banning biological boys to play in sports for girls and took public financing for gender transportation treatment for adults.
Four accounts will now head to the house.
