Scottish assistant John Carver insists that George Hirst is “a kind of player we need” because the IpSwich striker transforms allegiance from England.
The striker, who represented England to the U20 level, fulfills the conditions through his grandfather and on Tuesday would be appointed in Steve Clarke’s original team, but because of the paperwork, this did not happen.
Hirst, who scored his second Premier League goal against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, is one of the three new calls for the playoffs against Greece.
Carver said that bringing Hirst, Lennon Miller and James Wilson adds something new to the group.
“It’s pretty refreshing to have new faces, especially some young guys who have been under the age of 21,” the coach said. “It shows that Steve is ready to give them the opportunity and there is a path.
“But obviously George is a kind of late arrival. We’ve been following him for months.”
The 26-year-old has performed regularly in the Premier League this season, and he also scored a hit twice in the Fa Cup, and Carver insists that Clear Hirst really wanted to transfer loyalty.
“When we asked him, he was delighted to have come to us and joined us,” he added.
“We want that. We always said that we want players how they want to come and play for Scotland.
“I know his father (former Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton striker David Hirst) played for England, but he wants to play for Scotland and that’s the type of player we need.”
