George Russell discovers Mercedes optimism during 2025. A change of car on the eve of the new season of F1 | F1 news
George Russell says Mercedes is “optimistic” because of the impact of changes on their 2025 car, which have been “for a long time”.
After launching eight consecutive titles of the constructor, Mercedes struggled with the introduction of new regulations in 2022, beating only one race during that year and pulled out empty in 2023.
Silver Arrows achieved some progress in 2024, because Russell and teammate Lewis Hamilton, who now went to Ferrari, took two victories, but inconsistency meant that they had finished almost 200 points from champion McLaren in fourth place in the Constructor Sales Data .
This is partially because Mercedes started the season well from the pace for the third consecutive campaign, but Russell hopes to make the knowledge at the beginning of last year can result in a stronger performance on the Grand Prix, which opens the season on March 16.
Speaking when starting a new partnership with Adidas, Russell said Sky Sports: “There were a lot .. I wouldn’t say that changes directly from last year to this year, these are things that have been in progress for a long time, items we couldn’t quite put in a 2024 car. But we have been working on them for a long time.
“We are optimistic that it will be a good step in the right direction. Obviously you never know what your rivals will do.
“During this year, thinking about 2026, whether people develop or not, will be quite intriguing.”
Russell ‘absolutely’ ready to win a championship
Russell’s time in Mercedes coincided with a regression team from the title claim, which made him difficult to prove if there was a tool for the world champion.
The fact that he ended up in front of Hamilton in two of their three seasons as teammates is a pretty strong indicator of his genera’s, and Russell certainly does not lack confidence.
Asked if he was ready to ask for a maiden title if Mercedes gives him a car that won the championship, Russell said, “Absolutely. I feel ready, everyone in the team is so motivated.
“I feel that this year there were attempts and mistakes, but every time we had the opportunity to win, we won.
“And it gives me optimism that if we have a car, we can achieve it.
“We do how much we can be this year, but everyone is completely on board and it will be an exciting season.”
Mercedes confirmed that he would officially launch his 2025 Challenger, W16, February 24th.
