The Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) is all set to debut with three teams in February
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to launch the first Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) immediately after the conclusion of the ongoing Men’s BPL.
The first edition of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) will be held between February 8 and 15, with three teams participating in the tournament. Each team will meet the others twice in six league games before the final showdown.
Bangladesh will host the first Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL) in February 2025.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) women’s wing president Nazmul Abedin confirmed the launch of WBPL next month and said they are ready to start the league with three teams this year. Earlier, the BCB considered four teams for the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League, but they felt that a three-team competition would be more competitive.

Nazmul Abedin was quoted by Cricbuzz, “The plan is to do it (WBPL) with three teams. To organize a quality tournament, you need a sufficient number of talented players. Expanding beyond three teams would reduce quality. Although we considered four teams, we decided this format was more feasible.”
Abedin stressed that the Bangladesh Cricket Board is not hosting the Bangladesh Women’s Premier League for financial reasons only, but rather they aim to raise the standard of women’s cricket in the country through this exciting competition.
BCB aims to improve the standard of women’s cricket through the WBPL
The BCB president further pointed out, “Our focus is not only on organizing the tournament for financial gain, but on improving the standard of women’s cricket. The three-team competition will be more competitive. It will be held soon after the men’s BPL ends and will last for eight to nine days. Talks have already taken place with the franchises and they want to participate.”
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Women’s Premier League is set to debut a unique squad composition that allows just one foreign player in each XI. Each of the three participating teams will have to select 15 domestic players, with the quota of foreign players remaining open to bring an international flavor to the WBPL.

All the matches of the inaugural WBPL are scheduled to be held at the iconic Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur. BCB decided to go ahead with three teams to focus on the available pool of skilled players in Bangladesh to ensure a competitive and high quality event.
Financial issues will not affect BPL for women: Nazmul Abedin
On the other hand, Nazmul Abedin, who is also the member secretary of the BPL governing council, insisted that there will be no wage issues in the WBPL like the BPL. Recently, BPL Durbar Rajshahi players protested against the franchise owners over unpaid wages.
Nazmul Abedin signed off saying, “We are committed to carefully resolving technical and financial issues. These issues will not affect BPL women. There were doubts whether we could successfully organize this BPL. Many franchises left during the transition and we took a risk. Although some areas did not go as planned, we aim to resolve these issues in progress.”
