Tank Davis’ blinding speed, but against whom?

Gervonta Davis showed off his blinding hand speed today, working out with his trainer, Barry Hunter, on the gloves as he prepares to defend his WBA lightweight title against Lamont Roach on March 1st at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The glove master

Davis looks great in the gloves, but that’s overkill because his opponent, the super featherweight Roach, has no power and is outmatched in this fight. It would be nice if Tank would train like a dog and fight someone with real talent. That’s when you get interested in watching him hit with his gloves, but not when it’s just another pick like all the others during Davis’ carefully managed 12-year pro career.

Tank Davis’ last seven opponents

– Frank Martin
– Ryan Garcia
– Hector Garcia
– Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero
– Isaac Cruz
– Mario Barrios
– Leo Santa Cruz

It’s a mediocre group, and none of them are relevant lightweight fighters, not one. So it’s great that Tank Davis is great at hitting the gloves, but it’s not worth it when you’re facing a marginal opponent on a $75 PPV. Those types of fights should be free because they are matches meant to be mismatched.

Tank’s form was quite reminiscent of Floyd Mayweather Jr., his former promoter, in his exercises with gloves. But the two couldn’t be further apart in fighting style. Fortunately, Davis (30-0, 28 KOs) is a lot more fun to watch than Floyd Jr. was.

Where is the challenge?

Fans want to see Tank knock out Roach (25-1-1, 15 KOs) and then start fighting an opponent who has a chance to beat him. Davis or his management almost always picked fighters in which he was a big favorite.

They want to see him fight someone like Shakur Stevenson, Keyshawn Davis, Andy Cruz, Edwin De Los Santos, Vasily Lomachenko and William Zepeda at lightweight.
