The government’s media office in Gaza said on Thursday that Israeli military forces had carried out 34 airstrikes in the past 24 hours, resulting in 71 deaths, including the head of the enclave’s police force and his deputy.
Israeli attacks have been reported across the conflict-ridden enclave, including the so-called al-Mawasi humanitarian zone and the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza, which has been repeatedly bombed in recent days.
Palestinians were also killed and wounded in attacks on the Remal and Shujayea neighborhoods of Gaza City, and the town of az-Zawayda, in the central Gaza Strip.
Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN’s Palestine Refugee Agency (UNRWA), says Israel’s deadly attack on the al-Mawasi displacement camp in southern Gaza is another signal for the end of the war.
“At the beginning of the year, we received reports of another attack on al-Mawasi with dozens of people killed, another reminder that there is no humanitarian zone, let alone a safe zone [in Gaza]”, he said. “Every day without a ceasefire will bring more tragedy.”
Asked about the death toll on Thursday, an Israeli army spokesman said the army had followed international law in conducting the war in Gaza and was taking “feasible precautions to mitigate harm to civilians”.
Photojournalist Hassan al-Qishaoui was among those killed on Thursday. At least 217 journalists and media workers have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023.
