Chelsea are interested in signing San Diego Wave defender Naomi Girma, with a world record fee likely to be required to seal the deal.

Lyon also want to sign Girma, s The Athletic reporting that the French club have offered a record fee of $1m (£821,000) for the 24-year-old.

US international Girma played 44 times for her country and won gold with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.

Girma was also named the 2023 American Soccer Player of the Year.

Chelsea are definitely interested and it would almost certainly cost a world record to sign Girma.

Lyon have the money to do the deal through Michelle Kang’s investment and the club are looking to return to the top flight of European football, as well as potentially finding a long-term solution for Wendie Renard at the back.

Chelsea aren’t afraid to spend big in January, you only have to look at the £400k they spent on Mayra Ramirez and the league leading deal they initially signed Sam Kerr on.

Another reason Chelsea may want to sign Girma now is Kadeisha Buchanan with an ACL injury keeping her out this season.

Girma, whose contract expires at the end of 2026, looks set to head for Europe.

Many see her as the best central defender in the world. Now someone has to prove it financially.
