AUS vs IND: Cricket Australia admits mistake after Sunil Gavaskar’s robbery handing over BGT Trophy to winning team
The excitement of 2024-25 Granica-Gavaskar Trophy came to an end as Australia defeated India in the fifth and final Test match to claim a 3–1 series victory. This finally ended Australia’s long wait to win the Border-Gavaskar trophy after 10 years. Amidst the home team’s celebrations, a mistake during the presentation of the trophy caught the attention of cricket fans and analysts.
Sunil Gavaskar was not invited to present BGT 2024-25
In a major development at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), an Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar who shares his name along with the former Australian cricketer Allan Border at the Border-Gavaskar trophy, he was not invited on stage to present the trophy to the winning captain Pat Cumminstogether with his Australian counterpart. The 75-year-old former Indian skipper stood 100 meters from the presentation venue as Border was called on stage to present the prestigious trophy.
Later, the Indian legend recalled the incident while talking to News Corp and remarked that he would have liked to give the trophy to the winning captain.
“I would certainly like to be there for the presentation. After all, it is the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and it is about Australia and India. I mean, I’m here on earth. It shouldn’t matter to me that Australia won when it comes to presentation. They played better cricket so they won. That’s fine. I would be happy to present the trophy with my good friend Allan Border.” Gavaskar said.

Cricket Australia accepts its guilt
After the news of Gavaskar being thrown out of the trophy ceremony became the talk of the cricketing world, Cricket Australia came out and admitted a big mistake on their part.
“We admit that it would have been better if both Allan Border and Sunil Gavaskar had been invited to take the stage,” a CA spokesperson said in a statement acknowledging their mistake. However, Cricket Australia also confirmed that Gavaskar was aware of the fact that he would hand over the trophy to the Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah that the visiting side had won the Sydney Test and retained the trophy.
