Former Arsenal attacking midfielder Tomas Rosicky has emerged as the frontrunner to become the club’s new sporting director, according to a report.
The gunners had Edu Gašpar poached by the multi-club network led by Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis in November, leaving his inexperienced former assistant Jason Ayto in the January transfer window. Arsenal remained outwardly relaxed in search of Edu’s replacementgiving themselves the rest of the season to name a permanent successor.
Mikel Arteta and the club’s executive team appear to have identified former Czech Republic midfielder Rosicky as a “leading candidate”, according to The Guardian.
Arsenal they are said to have been in “regular contact” with Rosicky, who has worked as sporting director of Sparta Prague since December 2018.
During his six years in charge, the Czech giants rose from fifth place to finish Champions League makes this season for the first time in almost two decades. After winning the last two Premier League titles, Sparta went into the winter break this term in third place, and it is believed that Rosicky wants to experience the current campaign.
This is not the first time Rosicky’s name has been mentioned. The former midfielder, who scored 28 goals in 246 appearances for Arsenal during a decade in north London, was linked with the role back in November, together with his former teammate Per Mertesacker.
Paris Saint-GermainStrategic adviser Luis Campos and Brentford’s director of football Phil Giles are also featured. However, the club reportedly wants a person with connections to the club.
