Even Mohamed Salah would struggle at Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has backed attacking striker Son Heung-min to rediscover his best form soon, insisting that even Mohamed Salah would struggle in the team’s current injury crisis.
My son saw it recently contract extension for one year launched during a season that, according to his high standards, has so far fallen short of expectations. The winger has five goals and six assists in 17 games as Spurs struggle in 12th place Premier League standings. Salah, meanwhile, is at the top of the rankings both in terms of goals and assists.
Postecoglou urged Son’s critics to step back and embrace the team’s wider struggles. This season they were hit by an election crisis that could leave them without even 11 first team players for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Liverpool.
“People need to have some context,” Postecoglou began. “Mo is a world-class player, but if you put him in our team now, I’m not sure he’ll have the same level of performance because of the situation we’re in as a group.
“You need a team that is in good form, creates chances, plays up front, has a really solid foundation of defense that is cohesive. None of that exists at the moment [at Spurs]. We rely on individual moments.
“Mo is an amazing player but he plays in a fantastic flying team. I would dare say that if you put Sonny Liverpoolteam, I think his goal would be decent.
“We’re a team that’s very distracted, that doesn’t play fluidly that he can play with. We’re asking players to play in positions that are completely unfamiliar to them. But when we’re at our best, I still think you’ll see Sonny come back – in terms of his ability to score goals and be really effective for us. He’s going through a tough trot, but we’re going through a tough trot.”
