Barcelona and Real Madrid find out their opponents in the round of 16 of the King’s Cup
Barcelona will face Real Betis, while Real Madrid take on Celta Vigo in the last 16 of the Copa del Rey next week.
Last weekend, the Spanish giants played their third round matches against the fourth division without much fuss. Barcelona strolled to a 4-0 win over Barbastra, with the only moot point being the omission of Dani Olmo and Pau Victor during extended contractual standstill. Even the defeated hosts had something to cheer about because Israel Garcia proposed to his girlfriend after the game.
Real Madrid they were just as comfortable in their 5-0 demolition of Deportivo Minera as Carlo Ancelotti shuffled his pack ahead of a busy holiday fixture list.
Atletico Madrid narrowly edged out Marbella in the previous round and face another lower league opponent in the form of Elche next week.
The powers that be of the Spanish Football Federation did not give their teams much time to prepare. Some clubs will have less than a week to scout their opponents ahead of the round of 16 fixtures scheduled for January 14, 15 and 16 next week.
Barcelona and Real Madrid could be involved in the Spanish Super Cup final to be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday, January 12. The Clasico duo are already in the Middle East for semi-final matches against Athletic Club and Mallorca.
As in all King’s Cup matches before the semi-finals, the matches will be played in one leg. In the new development, VAR will be in operation.
