Michael Clarke names the ‘best fast bowler ever’ in all three formats
Former Australian cricketer Michael Clarke shared his opinion on who he feels holds the title of the best fast bowler in all three formats of the game. In a recent chat, Clarke shared his thoughts on what makes the fast bowler stand out, especially when playing in different formats like Test cricket, One Day Internationals (ODIs) and T20Is.
Michael Clarke picks the best fast bowler in different formats
Clarke, after reflecting on a string of fast bowling performances, called India’s Jasprit Bumrah as the best fast bowler he has seen in all formats. Clarke praised Bumrah’s ability to consistently bowl well in all conditions, something he felt set him apart from other great fast bowlers.
The former Australian captain went on to explain that Bumrah’s incredible versatility across conditions and formats, along with his match-winning abilities, made him stand out. Clarke emphasized that Bumrah’s prowess across formats – be it his lethal yorkers in T20s or his ability to bowl long spells in Tests – is what makes him a freak of nature.
“What I thought about Bumrah, after the series ended and I sat and thought about his performances, I actually think he is the best fast bowler ever in all three formats,” Clarke said on ESPN’s Around The Wicket.

Clarke reflects on the greats of past eras
Clarke acknowledged the immense influence of legendary fast bowlers of yesteryear, citing the likes of Curtly Ambrose and Glenn McGrath. However, he pointed out that these legends did not get a chance to play T20 cricket, which is a vital part of the game today. While their contributions have been immense, Clarke believes Bumrah stands out for his ability to excel in all three formats.
“I know a lot of great fast bowlers, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath, they haven’t played T20 cricket, so I’m not talking about those guys, but in terms of everyone who has played all three formats, I think he might be the best ever. He’s actually so good in all conditions, that’s what makes him great; any conditions, any format, this guy is a freak,” Clarke added.
