Trump fires back at ABC presidential debate moderator for fact-checking crime rate during rally

President-elect Donald Trump attacked ABC News reporter David Muir by recalling his claim that “violent crime is going down” during ABC presidential debate in September.

During his the Sunday rally before the inaugurationTrump acknowledged the “hundreds and even thousands of victims” of migrant crime, noting that crime is on the rise even without illegal immigrants.

Trump then recalled Muir fact-checking him during a presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris in September.

“Do you remember when I was hosting the debate and David Muir from the ABC said, ‘No, no crime has gone down.’ I said, ‘No, no, it went through the roof.’ Crime went through the roof [said] no, no crime has decreased. I said it failed. And then he says, ‘Uh, I don’t agree with that.’ The next day they announced that crime had increased by 40%. This guy is…the whole thing is so bad,” Trump said.

Muir, who was co-hosting with Linsey Davis at the time, insisted during the debate that Trump was incorrect when he claimed crime was “through the roof.”

“President Trump, as you know, the FBI says that overall violent crime is going down in this country,” Muir said.

“The FBI — they falsified statements. They didn’t include the worst cities. They didn’t include the cities with the worst crime. It was a fraud. Just like their number of 818,000 jobs they said they created turned out to be a fraud,” Trump replied.

While ABC News did not announce that the crime was “the next day,” the FBI’s review came a month later in October They appeared to confirm Trump’s original comments. After initially announcing that violent crime was down 2.1% in 2022, the FBI later admitted there was a 4.5% increase with a net total of about 80,029 more violent crimes in 2022 compared to in 2021

Muir did not acknowledge the change on his “World News Tonight” show after the revision was announced.

Trump has repeatedly attacked Muir because he was checking him out during the debate while ignoring Harris.

“And during the debate I mentioned that and David Muir, a real lightweight,” Trump said in September. “I was one against three, but I think we were great. But David Muir of the ABC, the fake news, when I said that crime is on the rise in our country, he corrected me, he corrected me and so much and it was right that I said he didn’t correct it [Vice President Kamala Harris] once, and what she said was wrong, absolutely wrong. So many different— Charlottesville, she was wrong, all different things, almost everything she said and was never corrected.

“But he corrected me about crime. He said, ‘No, no, crime hasn’t gone up.’ I said crime has gone up a lot, he said, ‘I’d like to say crime has not gone up,’ Trump said.
