DAVID MARCUS: As Trump takes office, forgotten Americans are demanding to be heard

On Monday at noon, something extraordinary will happen. Donald Trump will once again take office as President of the United States. It is a political comeback unparalleled in our nation’s history.

There will be balls, galas and fireworks galore. All the traditional ephemera of power, all the rich men strutting around in their tuxedos and taking selfies. This is how the right set always congratulates itself.

But they did not win this election. The hardworking people of America are.

Trump is not returning to the residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue because the billionaires wanted him to. Elon Musk and company from Silicon Valley did not do this. Trump won because Americans with thankless jobs like nurses, police officers, plumbers, bus drivers and waitresses did it.

I know this because I spent the entire election traveling the country talking to them. I knew Trump would win because they wanted him to. Demanded it.

These were everyday working people who told me the prices were too high and the border a threat to national security. As one woman in Bedford, Pennsylvania asked me, “How do I know we won’t be the next Springfield, Ohio” where migrants overran the community?

In Springfieldwhere I traveled to hear the real story, I was told that their community was being destroyed, that young people could not rent a house near their parents because they were going three to a room to Haitian migrants.

IN Staunton, VirginiaI met business owners, most of them self-described Democrats, who were really struggling. Some of them were willing to give Trump a try, not because they liked him, but because they somehow trusted him.

In San FranciscoI have met Democrats at the end of their strength, so tired of mismanagement that they were willing to try anything.

In Chicagothe union guys I talked to didn’t like Trump, but were so horrified by Kamala Harris’s incompetence and the Democratic Party giving them more promises than results that they went with the Donald.

You can see the pattern. Trump’s victory is not a big mystery, it was the natural conclusion of Biden’s presidency that consistently put the American people and their interests last.

Scranton Joe’s presidency was – and thankfully we can now say “was” – a disaster on almost every front. His ill-fated diplomatic corps ignited wars around the world, his economic team made staples too expensive, and his Justice Department went to war with Christianity.

On all these fronts, Trump will be an improvement. That’s why he was chosen.

But as the Trump administration, with its flashy meme coins and fancy balls, takes over, caution is in order. People I’ve met on the road across America aren’t big fans of rich people in fancy dresses who promise to control our lives.

The truck drivers elected Donald Trump, the movers, and the construction workers elected him. He won’t be at the gala dinner, he won’t hang out with Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, who will be sitting on the podium at Trump’s beck and call.

And make no mistake, both billionaires caved in a way that no ordinary worker in Brooklyn would, because a hard-working American never has to. They just show up to work, and then they, and only they, decide who wins the election.

Trump has a generational opportunity to make this country better for working men and women. I don’t think anyone doubts that he wants it or will fight for it, and that’s a reason for optimism.

But the incoming Trump administration, after the festivities and the hollow compliments of the think tank millionaires, better remember who really put them in power and why.

There is real hope, there really is, there is a sense that this administration can put this country on a better footing. Polling shows 60 percent of Americans are optimistic about the incoming administration. That’s great news.
