Bizarre! Will Sutherland, Fergus O’Neill kicked out of BBL game for shocking reason
Melbourne Renegades captain Will Sutherland is dismissed from the bowling attack during a match against Brisbane Heat in the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season. Sutherland was removed from the bowling attack after running in the danger area multiple times while bowling during the match.
Melbourne Renegades won the toss and chose to bowl at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne on Saturday 18th January. Nathan McSweeney and Jack Wood provided a strong start for Brisbane Heat. Adam Zampa gave his team the breakthrough by dismissing McSweeney, who scored 29 off 26 balls.

The incident happened on the last ball of the 12th over. Will Sutherland was ordered away from the bowling attack for entering the danger area after being cautioned during his first over. Matt Renshaw smashed three consecutive sixes before Sutherland was removed from the bowling attack.
The Big Bash League’s official social media account X (formerly known as Twitter) shared footage of Sutherland arguing with the umpire after being removed from the tackle.

Fergus O’Neill joins skipper Will Sutherland in being removed from the bowling
The incident happened again in the match when Fergus O’Neill was ordered to withdraw from a tackle for landing in a dangerous area after being cautioned beforehand. O’Neill was the second bowler, after Sutherland, to be removed from the attack during the match. Josh Brown completed the over both times.

Brisbane Heat scored 196 runs for the loss of four in 20 overs. Jack Wood was the top scorer for the Heat with 45 runs off 27 balls, including two fours and four sixes. Matt Renshaw (40 off 22) and Tom Alsop (42 off 26) chipped in with useful knocks. For Renegades, Adam Zampa claimed two wickets for 29 runs.
MCC Law 41.13: Bowler runs in a protected area
41.13.1 It is unfair for the bowler to enter the protected area in his passing without justifiable reason, regardless of whether the ball has been delivered or not.
41.13.2 If a bowler breaches this Rule, in the first instance and when the ball is dead, the umpire shall
– warn the thrower and inform the other referee about what happened. This caution will apply to that pitcher during innings.
– inform the captain of the playing side and the batsmen about what happened.
41.13.3 If, in that innings, the same bowler breaches this rule again, the umpire shall repeat the above procedure indicating that this is the final warning. This warning also applies during modifications.
41.13.4 If, in that innings, the same pitcher breaks this Rule a third time, when the ball is dead, the umpire shall order the fielding captain to immediately suspend the pitcher from pitching.
