Former England and Manchester City defender Steph Houghton has shared her views on this season’s Women’s Super League title race as she predicts it will be the most competitive yet.
Chelsea they have won the last five league titles and are currently on course to make it six as they top the table with 10 games played. Houghton was a part Manchester City a team that pushed the London club to the end of last term as the trophy was won on goal difference on the final day.
This time, under new manager Sonie Bompastor, Chelsea are six points clear at the top of the table as they approach the midway point, but City, Arsenal and Manchester United all are competing to continue in the second half of the campaign.
Houghton retired from playing at the end of last season and is now often on the sidelines as a specialist. This week she was named as one of four 2024 admitted to WSLInducted into the Hall of Fame alongside former Arsenal teammates Alex Scott and Gilly Flaherty, as well as recently retired pioneering referee Rebecca Welch.
Speaking at an event on Monday where the four were officially recognized for their achievements on and off the field, Houghton shared her views on this season’s title race and why it could be the best yet.
“These next two months are really crucial in terms of the league title and Chelsea are on top at the moment,” said the former England star. “But you look at Manchester City and Arsenal [close behind].
“There will be points dropped and that’s the beauty of this league because it’s so exciting. It’s nice to be on the other side and not feel that pressure.
“I honestly think that the second half of this season will be the most competitive so far.”
The WSL returns this weekend after the winter break with some cracking clashes including the Manchester derby. Chelsea will play away at West Ham, while Arsenal will play against Crystal Palace.
Houghton believes there have been some standout performers in the WSL this season, including one of her former teammates who is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
“There have been good performers so far,” she concluded. “For Chelsea it is Guro Reiten because she is a player who is really consistent.
“She adds goals to her game and assists. I feel like Chelsea are hard to beat at the moment.
“There is a lot that stands out. Alessia Russo for Arsenal is also starting to hit form. Before Hempo [Lauren Hemp’s] injury, I think she’s been the best player in the league without a doubt, but she’s got four or five months to go so there will be a few more names to add to that.”
