An Israeli drone attack killed 6 people in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank | News about the occupied West Bank
An Israeli military drone reportedly fired three missiles at a group of people in a refugee camp in Jenin.
The least among them were a Palestinian teenager and three brothers six people were killed in an Israeli airstrike in the Jenin refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, according to reports.
The Palestinian Wafa news agency said an Israeli drone fired three missiles at a group of people near a busy roundabout in the camp on Tuesday night, killing six people, including a 15-year-old boy, and wounding several others.
Another five victims of the attack are between the ages of 23 and 34, and three brothers are among them, reports Wafa. Earlier this month, an Israeli drone strike on the occupied West Bank town of Tammun killed two Palestinian children and a 23-year-old from the same family.
Al Jazeera’s Hamdah Salhut said the drone attack on the Jenin camp came amid intense Israeli military attacks on local communities and the killing of nearly 800 Palestinians by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank since October 7, 2023 – as well as the arrest of several thousand others .
“The Israeli defense minister said that Israel will continue this policy throughout the West Bank,” Salhut said, adding that the violence in the occupied territory is now known as Israel’s “silent war.”
“It’s become known as the silent war — parallel, side by side with what Israel is doing in Gaza, but it doesn’t get as much attention,” Salhut said.
The deadly drone attack also comes in the middle of a military operation launched in the Jenin camp Palestinian Authority (PA) security forces over the past few weeks, targeting Palestinian resistance fighters, resulting in the killing of more than a dozen people.
Anwar Rajab, a spokesman for PA security forces, said the aim of the attack was to “disrupt efforts” by authorities to achieve security and stability in Jenin.
Hassan Khraisheh, deputy chairman of the Palestinian Legislative Council, said the drone attack showed Israel’s willingness to kill Palestinians indiscriminately.
“This is a clear message from the Israeli occupation that every Palestinian is a target,” Khraisheh told Al Jazeera.
The drone strike also sparked outrage among local residents because it came amid a PA military operation in Jenin, Khraisheh said, adding that PA should now withdraw from Jenin and unite with other Palestinian groups in opposing the Israeli occupation.
“Our enemy is one – either as resistance fighters or [PA] security force,” he said.
“No one is safe from Israeli attacks.”
Earlier on Tuesday, the Jena Battalion of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad said it agreed with a local initiative to end Palestinian internal conflicts and stop bloodshed between Palestinians in the occupied territory. The group did not disclose details of the agreement, but said it affirms the “legitimate right to resist criminal occupation.”
Along with its campaign to crush the fighters in Jenin, which it calls “outlaws”, the PA is also suspended by Al Jazeera in the occupied West Bank in what is seen as further silencing of dissent and freedom of expression by the authorities.
