Carlo Ancelotti clashes with Real Madrid hierarchy over plans for January transfers
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti is looking for reinforcements in January transfer window were rejected internally by club officials, the report claims.
Despite the summer arrivals of strikers Kylian Mbappe and Endrick, Madrid have struggled to show their best form this season. They are second in La Liga, 20th in the Champions League standings and have been recently defeated by Barcelona 5-2 in the Super Cup final.
Concerns about a lack of defensive depth have been heightened this season following injuries to Dani Carvajal and Eder Militao, while David Alaba returned to the bench in the Super Cup final for the first time since tearing his ACL in December 2023.
The Athletic state that Ancelotti has made no secret of his desire for reinforcements this month due to concerns that Madrid will not meet their targets for 2024/25, but those in charge do not share those sentiments.
Indeed, club officials do not believe major signings are wise in the January transfer window – their last winter signing was the £26m takeover of Brazilian midfielder Reinier in 2020.
There is agreement that a new centre-back and right-back are needed in the summer window. Madrid stays wants to get Trent Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool on a free transfer and even explored the possibility of a winter move, only to see their cut-price proposal quickly rejected by the Anfield side.
