What Altay Bayindir did for his Man Utd teammates after his FA Cup heroics has been revealed
Manchester United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir took his teammates out for a celebratory dinner after his penalty shootout heroics beat Arsenal in the FA Cup third round.
Cup tie in North London saw Bayindir, who had a shaky first 70 minutes, come alive when tasked with keeping United level. Arsenal were controversially awarded a penalty – referee Andy Madley deemed Harry Maguire had fouled Kai Havertz with VAR not in place to intervene – and Martin Odegaard stepped up after never missing from 12 yards in his senior professional career.
Bayindir ended that record by stretching to his left, dispossessing the ball, before Declan Rice’s superb save from the spot sent the game into extra time. In the end, a penalty shoot-out was needed to separate the two rivals, and Bayindir was again the hero to save Kai Havertz’s effort.
United scored all five penalties to advance to the fourth round – a reunion with Ruud van Nistelrooy, now Leicestermanagers, awards – and Bayindir was deservedly named man of the match.
Speaking with club channelsBayindir’s goalkeeper teammate Andre Onana revealed how Bayindir celebrated the occasion.
“We all congratulated him because he did a fantastic job. We are all proud of him,” remarked Onana. “He’s been here for a year and a half, or even more, and he’s been working hard every day. Now he’s got his reward. He’s earned it.
“He invited us, by the way, to a restaurant [after the game] because he had such a nice performance. We hope that they will call us more, much more, because that means they will continue to play like this!”
Bayindir had made just four appearances for United before his Sunday heroics, with three of those appearances coming in this season’s Carabao Cup. Despite this, United are being linked with the signing of a new goalkeeper – Parma’s £40m Zion Suzuki allegedly at the crosshairs of the club.
