RCB’s Potential Batting Lineup for IPL 2025: Andy Flower’s Strategy
In an interesting conversation with Sports YesRCB head coach Flower shared insights into the franchise’s strategic planning and potential lineup for the IPL 2025 season. When asked about the thought process during the mega auction, Flower highlighted two key areas the team was looking to strengthen. “There were two really obvious areas that we felt needed to be addressed, and we picked hitters with a lot of power,” Flower said, alluding to a focused approach to improving the squad’s firepower and depth.
While Flower remained tight-lipped on RCB’s exact plans, his remarks hinted at a well-thought-out approach aimed at winning the elusive IPL title in 2025. With a mix of proven performers and promising talent, RCB seem to have built a squad capable of challenging the best in the tournament.
Opening pair to watch for Royal Challengers Bengaluru
Flower has worked out a team selection philosophy, which prioritizes securing explosive batting talent capable of producing match-winning performances, especially at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium – a venue known for high-scoring games. He noticed,
“If you look at the potential line-up, Phil Salt, who is known for his aggressive opening, could partner Virat Kohli at the top,” the former cricketer added.
Kohli, retained for INR 21 crore, will once again open the innings. After a brilliant 2024 IPL season, in which he won the Orange Cap with 741 runs, Kohli remains the cornerstone of RCB’s batting line-up. His consistency, with six 400+ run seasons in the last seven IPL editions, underlines his importance as a leader and performer under pressure.
Partnering Kohli will be Salt, bought for INR 11.50 crore after a fantastic IPL 2024 with KKR, where he scored 435 runs in 12 matches. Salt’s aggressive approach complements Kohli’s game, especially in the smaller boundaries of the Chinnaswamy Stadium, making them a formidable opening duo. Additionally, Salt will don the goaltending gloves, adding versatility to the team.

Middle order stability for IPL 2025
The coach especially praised Rajat Patidar, one of the most consistent local performers and a revelation for RCB in previous IPL seasons. Flower also spoke about Liam Livingstone, a proven all-rounder who adds both depth and flexibility to the squad
“And then further down we have Rajat Patidar who was sensational for us last season. He was in great form in domestic cricket as well, as was Liam Livingstone,” The head coach of RCB remarked.
Rajat Patidar, retained for INR 11 crore, is expected to be at No.3. After consistent performances in the last two IPL seasons, with 333 and 395 runs in 2023 and 2024, Patidar’s domestic form is also noteworthy. His ability to accelerate makes him a potential candidate to captain RCB in the future.
At No.4, Liam Livingstone, bought for ₹8.75 crore, brings power and versatility. Although his last two IPL seasons have been underwhelming, his ability to clear the ropes and contribute with spin bowling makes him a valuable asset. His strong recent form in international cricket will be crucial for RCB.
The Bengaluru-based franchise’s lower middle order
Speaking about the need for a strong finish, Flower highlighted the inclusion of Jitesh Sharma, a young wicketkeeper-batsman known for his finishing ability and flair under pressure. “Jitesh Sharma is an exciting young wicketkeeper and batsman who has been outstanding in the domestic circuit and brings an exciting dynamic to our side,” explained the 56-year-old.
Another key addition to the lower middle order is Tim David, whose reputation as a finisher precedes him. “Tim’s success in Australia and in T20 leagues around the world shows his ability to handle high-pressure situations, so the sheer power, especially in high-scoring games at Chinnaswamy, makes him perfect for our plans.” Flower concluded.
Jitesh, bought for INR 11 crore, is likely to be fifth. Known for her finishing skills, Sharma’s performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophywhere he scored at a strike rate of 225.00, making him a key middle-order hitter.
The team, which was re-acquired for INR 3 crore, should provide firepower at No.6. After decent IPL performances with MI, scoring 231 and 241 in 2023 and 2024, David’s aggressive batting will be key to RCB’s lethal attacks. His familiarity with RCB, having made his debut with the franchise in 2021, adds an edge.
