The remains of an indigenous woman killed by a serial killer were found after searching a landfill in the Canadian Province of Manitoba, police say.
The remains of Morgan Harris were found on the Prairie Green landfill, north of Winnipeg, officials said. The authorities sought Harris (39) and Marcedes Myran, 26, both from Long Plain First Nation. Police say two sets of remains have been found.
Harris and Myran were among the four indigenous women killed in 2022, a convicted killer Jeremy Skibicki, who threw his body on two different landfills during a three -month period.
A search from the Prairie Green landfill began at the end of last year after the long -lasting campaign of native leaders.
Cambria Harris, Morgan’s daughter, said in a Facebook post on Friday that the discovery of the mother’s remains was a “very bitter moment.”
“Please hold our families in your hearts tonight and every day they go forward because we believe this process,” the post states.
Police initially refused to search the landfill, and the Federal Government study concluded that the search could take three years and cost up to $ 184 million (£ 100m; $ 128 million), and workers were exposed to dangerous chemicals.
Manitoba eventually committed $ 20 million to seek remains – the means aligned by the Federal Government.
In July last year, Skibicki was convicted of killing Harris and Myran, as well as killing a third woman, Rebecca Contois, 24, from the first o-chi-chak-ch-sipi nation and still unidentified woman named Buffalo Woman.
Their murders have not been undiscovered for months until a man who sought a waste metal in a bucket outside the skibicki apartment found partial human remains, identified as members of MS Contois.
Canada has long faced the crisis of missing and killed native women and girls. According to RCMP, indigenous women make up 10% of the population of missing women in Canada and 16% of women’s killings. An autochthonous women make up about 4% of the female population in Canada.
