Detroit police said two homeless children froze to death while they slept in a van with their family on Monday, while the mayor of the city revealed that their mother had addressed the homeless services a few months ago.

Two children, a two -year -old girl and a nine -year -old, died on Monday after the family entered Kasino Glktown and parked on the ninth floor to sleep, The police said.

Seven family members lived in a van: two children, their two brothers and sisters and their mother, together with their grandparents, lived in a van, according to the Detroit Police Directorate.

In the middle of the night – when temperatures fell to low to middle teenager outside – the van stopped running for a mechanical reason or ran out of gas, so the mother called on a family friend to come to help, police said.

Then, around noon, on Monday, her mother noticed that a nine -year -old boy was not breathing.

Police said a friend returned to a parking garage to take the girl to the hospital.

Three other children – at the age of 13, 8 and 4 – were physically fine, but they were checked, said the Police Captain Nathan Duda Police in Detroit Fox 2.

“(I feel sad, very sad. Especially as a father. I just can’t imagine what a family feels. I wish it didn’t happen,” Duda said. “This was unnecessary. That didn’t have to happen this way.”

He said the mother of children was detained and made a statement, but at this point she was not in custody.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said on Tuesday that her mother reached on the city’s homeless team at least three times, recently in November.

“During this conversation, there was no resolution about where it would go,” Duggan said at the news for news. He said the incident was “a terrible day for Detroit”.

He said the family did not invite the homeless team after that November call, and the city never followed with his family after that.

“For any reason, this was not considered to be an emergency,” Duggan said.

Duggan said that the beds were available a few kilometers from the shelter from Hollywood casino in the Greek city.

“It has to make us reconsider everything we do. The hearty part of this is that family beds have been available for just a few kilometers,” Duggan said.

Said the city Homeless services 400 beds were added for shelter this winter, from 900 to 1,300 beds.

In addition, 120 beds were added and the homeless workers were placed in 24/7 shifts, so they would be available during an hour to those who need it.
