Tottenham star defends Ange Postecoglou and praises ‘spectacular’ teenage duo
Pedro Porro dismissed suggestions that Ange Postecoglou is overworking Tottenham’s players in training due to injuries and revealed his admiration for the “spectacular” duo of Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall.
Spurs slipped to their 12th defeat in the Premier League this season at the weekend, losing 3-2 to Everton after a hot opening 45 minutes, the guests exploded and went into halftime with a three-goal deficit.
Goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison made the result respectable for Spurs, but they are in 15th place Premier League table after a disastrous run of form that coincided with continued injury problems.
Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Guglielmo Vicario, Dominic Solanke, Destiny Udogie, Yves Bissouma, Brennan Johnson, Timo Werner and Wilson Odobert all missed the trip to Merseyside, with most, if not all, likely to have been included in Spurs’ squad on the day of the match that he was ready.
There were suggestions that there was not enough fire on Postecoglou, whose job is secure for nowhe may be to blame for his training methods, but Porro has come to his manager’s defense by saying that each player has their own recovery regime and that their workload is well managed and looked after.
“We have a plan for all of our practices,” Porro said soccer.london. “Those players who don’t play as much have their own plan to come back, including me, I train in the club, but I also do my work outside the club, recovery, injury prevention.
“Everyone has their own schedule, if the training sessions are less intense, it is for those players who are returning, they have the training they need, and for the players who are playing, we need a lot of recovery.”
Spurs‘ catalog of injuries has seen Gray and Bergvall exposed to more first-team football than they may have expected to play at this juncture in their careers, but both have been hugely impressive despite results not going the club’s way.
Their form has caught the eye of Porra, who signed for €40m in January 2023, who while praising the duo said he was not completely surprised by how good they were.
“When you have injuries and you sign young players who are maybe for the future, then you sign them for the future, but you also have options if you get injuries,” said the Spaniard. “Lucas, Archie and the others have been doing so well but that, at the end of the day, is why the club brought them in. They had their chance and it’s up to them to take it.
“They do a spectacular job for the club and if we go through a bad moment and they suffer like we all do at the moment, it will make them great players in the future because they give their all for the team.”
