Spurs are chasing a “genius” upgrade on Werner, who is very similar to Eze

It would be hard to describe this season as anything other than a disaster for Tottenham Hotspur until now.

Ange Postecoglou parties are in the lower half of the tablehave a seemingly ever-growing injury list, and although there is still a chance they can beat Liverpool in the upcoming one League Cup semi-final, it’s very thin.

Moreover, even though the club is the second highest scorer in the league, the players love it Timo Werner continue to disappoint.

So fans should be excited by recent reports linking the North Londoners with someone who would be the perfect upgrade for the German, someone so talented that they have even been compared to the incredible Eberechi Eze.

Tottenham Hotspur news

According to a recent report from the Spanish publication Mundo DeportivoTottenham is one of several clubs that have inquired about the Barcelona player Dani Olmo.

Apart from the Lilywhites, the report revealed fellow Premier League sides Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in the Spaniard, while Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich have also shown interest.

Interestingly, the report claims that while the player, which cost Barça £51 million in the summer, he wants to stay, he could leave for free if the Catalan club fail to register him by January 3rd, which seems a real possibility.

Due to the level of competition, it could prove to be a difficult transfer to get over the line, but given Olmo’s sensational ability, he is worth pursuing, especially as he has drawn comparisons to Eze and would be Werner’s dream upgrade.

How Olmo compares to Werner and Eze

So before we look at how Olmo compares to Werner, let’s examine this comparison to Eze and where it comes from.

It primarily derived from FBrefwhich compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, then creates a list of the ten most comparable players for each, and in this case concluded that the Englishman is the second most similar striker, midfielder or winger to the Spaniard in the last 365 days .

The best way to see where this comparison came from is to look at the underlying metrics in which the pair rank closely, including but not limited to expected non-penalty goals, progressive carries, shots and shots on target, tackles won, successful take-ons and more, 90 each.

However, he shares another similarity with Eze, which is also one of the reasons Spurs should sign him: his positional versatility.

For example, like the Crystal Palace star, £149k a week “genius”, like dubbed by journalist Josh Buntingcan play multiple positions on the field, but specializes in attacking midfield and out on the wingswhich is why he could be Werner’s ideal upgrade.

To see how much of an upgrade he would be on the German wideman, we need only look at their raw production since the start of last season.

For example, since the beginning of last season, the 26-year-old Dinamo player has scored 14 goals and six assists in 40 appearances, which equates to an impressive goal share average every other game.

In contrast, the RB Leipzig loanee scored five goals and seven assists in 51 appearances over the same period, which translates to a far less impressive goal share average of every 4.25 games.

Ultimately, if Spurs find themselves with the opportunity to sign Olmo this month, they must take it, as he would be an immediate upgrade to Werner as an option on the left, and is good enough to challenge for a place in midfield as well.
