Shakib Al Hasan suspended from bowling after failing bowling action test
Bangladesh star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan once again he failed to reassess his bowling action. The latest test, conducted at the Sri Ramachandra Center for Sports Science in Chennai, confirmed that Shakib’s action did not comply with the legal restrictions set by International Cricket Council (ICC). As a result, his existing suspension from bowling remains in effect.
Shakib’s suspension comes as a huge blow to Bangladesh, especially with the Champions Trophy just a month away. While the 37-year-old remains eligible to play as a specialist batsman, his absence as a bowler leaves a significant void in the team’s plans.
Suspension details
The Bangladesh cricket The Board (BCB) released a statement on Shakib’s situation.
“The player’s existing suspension from bowling in international cricket following an initial independent assessment at Loughborough University in the UK also remains in place. A successful re-assessment is required for the bowling suspension to be lifted,” it said in a statement, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Shakib’s bowling first came under scrutiny in September last year during a County Championship match between Surrey and Somerset. The referees reported his action, prompting the all-rounder to undergo testing.
Failed tests and bowling ban
Shakib underwent his first action bowling assessment at Loughborough University in the UK but failed to meet the required standards. Consequently, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) banned him from bowling in all competitions organized by the board.
The ICC extended the ban to all domestic and international competitions run by its committee members. This ruling prevented Shakib from playing as a bowler in both formats of the game.
Despite the ongoing suspension, Shakib tried to clear his name through the re-evaluation process in Chennai. However, his failure to pass the test means he remains banned from bowling.
Impact on Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy campaign
Shakib’s further suspension is a major setback for Bangladesh’s Champions Trophy campaign. The veteran all-rounder has been a key part of the team’s success over the years, both with the bat and the ball.
Without Shakib’s bowling services, Bangladesh will have to rely heavily on their other bowling options. Team management will likely make adjustments to compensate for his absence on offense.
Shakib’s controversial year
2024 was a turbulent year for Shakib, marked by controversies on and off the field. His participation as a member of parliament in Bangladesh’s Awami League government drew criticism, particularly during the widespread protests in July and August.
Shakib’s political involvement affected his availability for the national team. He missed several crucial series, including the farewell Test match against South Africa in Mirpur. Protests for and against his role in politics were organized outside Dhaka, adding to the tension.
The all-rounder also missed Bangladesh’s ODI series against Afghanistan and West Indies, further limiting his cricketing appearances.
