Sanjay Bangar encourages Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket
India captain Rohit Sharma is facing growing calls to return to domestic cricket to rediscover his playing form after a disappointing series against Australia.
After India’s defeat 1-3 in Granica-Gavaskar Trophyformer cricketers and fans alike expressed concern over Rohit’s commitment to Test cricket. Among them is former Indian batting coach Sanjay Bangar, who suggested that Rohit should show his hunger for the longest format by participating in domestic tournaments like the Ranji Trophy.
Bangar’s message to Rohit
Speaking on Star Sports, Bangar emphasized the importance of leading by example. He pointed out that even experienced players love it Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane they returned to the home circuit to prove their worth.
“When you are 37, every failure hurts because a cricketer is a very proud person. “When he sees the performances he had in the past, but he can’t repeat them, and when young players play well, these factors come to his mind,” said Bangar.
“He has to determine if he is still hungry to play Test cricket. If he does, that hunger must be reflected in his actions.”
Pujara and Rahane lead by example
Bangar drew comparisons between Rohit and senior batsmen Pujara and Rahane, who have dropped out of the national team but have shown their commitment by proving themselves in domestic cricket.
“There was a lot of talk about playing domestic cricket. Players like Pujara and Rahane, who are at par with Rohit Sharma in stature, they have dropped out in the past but have shown their hunger playing domestic cricket. Even today, they are sweating on home grounds, which is a big drop compared to the intensity of international cricket,” explained Bangar.

“If Rohit goes on and performs in domestic cricket, no one can stop him. But that form and hunger must be evident,” he added.
The head coach of the Indian team is of the same opinion.
The management of the team has been criticized for its reactivity
Bangar did not stop at Rohit. He also criticized the Indian team management for taking a reactive approach to team selection during the series. He pointed out that the unexpected appearance of Nitish Reddy put the selectors in a dilemma.
“The combination of Nitish Reddy with Washington Sundar or Ravindra Jadeja created confusion. When there is a player in form, it is difficult to drop him. The team management seemed to be reactive as the series progressed rather than being proactive,” Bangar noted.
