IND vs ENG: Former England captain Michael Vaughan hails Varun Chakravarthy’s brilliant performance in first T20I
In the opening match of the five-match T20I series in between India and England at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the hosts triumphed with a convincing seven-wicket victory. India now lead the series 1-0, thanks to a scintillating performance from their ace spinner, Varun Chakravarthywho dismantled the English batting line-up with his clever variations and superb accuracy.
Chakravarthy’s spell was the cornerstone of India’s success. The right-arm leg bowler bowled an outstanding four-wicket spell, claiming three crucial wickets while conceding just 23 runs. His performance earned him the man of the match award and widespread praise from cricket pundits, including the former England captain Michael Vaughan.

Impressed by Chakravarthy’s brilliance, Vaughan praised the Indian bowler Chakravarthy, noting his skillful and deceptive skill. The former England batsman described the Tamil Nadu bowler as a “wonderful mystery player” who returns the ball to right-handers, occasionally keeps one up and consistently aims for the stumps. Although he is not a huge player, his subtle variations make him challenging to face. Vaughan emphasized Chakravarthy’s consistency and intelligence, urging England to adopt a different approach to counter him.
“Chakravarthy is a wonderful mystery spinner – he kind of returns the ball to right-handers. Every once in a while he’ll just pick one up. He’s not a great spinner of the ball, but he just does enough, which makes him very difficult – he’s always putting the stumps into play. He is very consistent and also very smart. England must find a different method to try and put him under pressure,Vaughan said in an interview with Cricbuzz.

Vaughan praises Chakravarthy’s skill
Vaughan further expressed his admiration for Chakravarthy’s bowling, noting his low-key, old-fashioned style of celebration of simply walking away after taking a wicket. “I love watching him bowl because when he gets a wicket, he doesn’t celebrate. He just kind of walks off to an old-fashioned kind of celebration, ” the former England captain added.
