Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli’s END decided in BCCI meeting, Shubman Gill’s role in his departure revealed

The future of the two power players of the Indian national cricket team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in Tests looks very dark. According to Hindustan Times reports, BCCI’s selection committee is learned to have discussed the future of both the players on Saturday (January 11).

The selection committee headed by Ajit Agarkar met in Mumbai to announce India’s squad for the T20I series against England. However, the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli was also a topic of conversation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, the Indian captain himself, Agarkar, BCCI secretary-elect Devajit Saikia and ICC president-elect Jay Shah.

Rohit Sharma’s future will depend solely on the selection committee

It is learned that Rohit Sharma’s future will now solely depend on the selection committee as the BCCI officials have left it to the selectors. But things are not good for the Indian captain as Ajit Agarkar and his team are worried about the number of opening batsmen in Test cricket.

Rohit Sharma, in the last 8 Tests, scored only 164 runs. In the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, he amassed just 31 runs at an average of around 6. He also came under a lot of criticism for this and there were calls for his retirement.

Selectors are known to be worried about Rohit’s declining chart in Test cricket – Source

A source close to the development said that things will not go the way Rohit Sharma wants. Emphasizing that the selection committee is worried, he said that he is confident that the captain of the Indian cricket team will make a decision at the right time. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he said:

“That’s not to say that Rohit’s ‘I’m not going anywhere’ statement is how things will ultimately pan out. The selectors are known to be concerned about Rohit’s slide down the charts in Test cricket, but it is understood that the captain will take an informed decision at the appropriate time.”

Shubman Gill decides Virat Kohli’s fate

Regarding Virat Kohli’s future, it is learned that the selectors are also worried about his form, but everything will depend on the young batsman Shubman Gill. The senior batsman’s future will depend on how the latter performs.

A source claimed that Shubman Gill did not settle into the role as Virat Kohli did before Sachin Tendulkar retired. He said that the election commission will soon report on this issue as well. he said:

“With the five-Test series against England still five months away, the selectors are likely to discuss this before forming an opinion. Shubman Gill has not settled into the Kohli role as expected; nowhere near as fit as Kohli was when Sachin Tendulkar hung up his boots. That’s something Agarkar’s selection committee will take into consideration.”

Both Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill underperformed in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While the senior batsman scored only around 190 runs, Gill managed just 93 runs in five innings at 18.60 with no fifty.
