Australia announces captain and vice-captain for ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025
Australia recently named their squad for the upcoming U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025, which is set to take place in Malaysia from January 18 to February 2. The team combines youthful energy with vast experience in domestic cricket, targeting their first tournament title since the relegation only briefly in the semi-finals of the first edition in South Africa in 2023. With a well-balanced mix of experienced players and promising newcomers, Australia is gearing up for a big challenge in the competition.
Captain Australia for U-19 T20 World Cup 2025
Now ahead of the start of the second edition, multi-colour bowling Lucy Hamilton has been named team captain and will lead the Australian team into the tournament.
Lucy will play in her second consecutive U-19 World Cup after being selected for the 2023 edition in South Africa as a 16-year-old. Hamilton made her a girl Women’s National Cricket League (WNCL) featured for the Queensland Fire in 2022 aged just 15, becoming the state’s second-youngest debutant, before also making his debut in Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) at the age of 16. The left-arm all-rounder produced a stunning performance last year by becoming the youngest cricketer in WBBL history to take five wickets. She took 5/8 from four overs while playing for Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Stars at Drummoyne Oval.
Lucy expressed her immense honor at being named Australia’s captain for the Under-19 World Cup, thanking her team for their strong leadership support. She emphasized the excitement of playing in the ultimate junior tournament and the team’s desire to take advantage of the opportunity in front of them.
“It is a great honor to be named captain of Australia for the Under-19 World Cup and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead our team. We are fortunate to have strong leaders in our group and I know I have fantastic support around me. I’m delighted to be playing for Australia again. Co-captain and rising star
Meanwhile, leg-spinner Hasrat Gill will serve as co-captain in the 16-team tournament. Amritsar-born Gill is one of the brightest young players in Australian cricket. She has already represented Australia at age group level and on 13 October 2024 she made her debut in the shortest format for Melbourne Stars during the T20 Spring Challenge vs Sydney Thunder. In that match, Hasrat took an impressive three wickets. Gill has now been named vice-captain of the team and her leg-spin will be crucial to Australia’s success. Known for her impressive bowling skills, Hasrat is expected to play a key role in the team’s strategies during the tournament.
