President Carter will lie in state at the US Capitol ahead of his funeral at the National Cathedral

The body of former President Jimmy Carter will be flown to the US Capitol included Tuesday afternoon where he will lie in state for three days before a state funeral in Washington, DC

Carter passed away last week, December 29, at the age of 100. His death came just over a year after his wife, Rosalynn Carter, of 77 years, died.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and other congressional leaders announced last month that Carter would lie in state, writing a letter to his son, James Carter III.

“In recognition of President Carter’s long and distinguished service to the nation, it is our intention to request that the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate to allow his remains to lie in state in the Rotunda of the United States Capitol,” the leaders wrote.

“With your approval, we will proceed with these arrangements so that the American people will have the opportunity to honor President Carter before he is laid to rest.”

Carter’s ceremonial arrival at the Capitol Rotunda is expected Tuesday afternoon and will include remarks by Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, RS.D.

The public will be able to view Carter’s casket from early Wednesday until early Thursday morning.

The former Democratic commander-in-chief’s body will arrive in Washington, DC, Tuesday afternoon to lie in state at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Georgia.

A week-long commemoration has begun at Carter’s hometown Plains, Georgiaon Saturday morning. Former US Secret Service agents who protected Carter carried his casket as pallbearers as he left Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

“There were people on every overpass. It was amazing and it gave you goosebumps just to sit in the van and see the reactions of people in Georgia,” his son said at the funeral in Atlanta.

Carter’s state funeral will be held at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday morning. The former president will then end his final journey with a private funeral in Plains, before being laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Carter family residence.
