Player ratings as Mbeumo double sinks sorry Saints
Southampton were doomed to a 5-0 defeat at Brentford on Saturday afternoon.
Incoming Saints boss Ivan Juric has promised to bring his unique “heavy metal” style to the south coast, but Southampton still play football’s equivalent of easy listening.
A re-invigorated Mikkel Damsgaard went through a flurry of half-hearted challenges before slotting a perfectly timed ball between the red and white stripes to give Kevin Schade his first goal after just six minutes.
Brentford’s in-form Dane is enjoying the best run of an underachieving career, providing his second assist in the space of four days after scoring the first goal of the game New Year’s defeat against Arsenal.
The Bees created a flurry of chances in search of a second but were denied in the first half by a combination of a lopsided finish and Aaron Ramsdale. Sepp van den Berg finally found the back of the net eight minutes from time, sending a powerful header into the bottom corner only for VAR to spot a foul in the sequel.
Juric emptied his bench after watching the Saints produce one of the saddest halves in football in a season that has produced a host of contenders for that dubious honour. However, the four substitutes who were on the field within ten minutes of the restart could do nothing against Bryan Mbeum’s thunderous strike. Coordinating to devastating effect with his strike partner Yoane Wissa wanted forward gave the visitors a 2-0 lead shortly after the hour mark.
Mbeumo got his second soon after, and Brentford’s third of the afternoon, converting a penalty in the 69th minute. Chelsea loanee Lesley Ugochukwu managed to drag Van den Berg to the turf as he lost his footing in a comically poor attempt to save a cross.
Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoane Wissa added to Southampton’s misery with goals in stoppage time, ensuring Brentford’s first away win of the season was an emphatic one.
