David Brooks’ wonderful volley ended up securing a 1-0 win for Bournemouth against Everton on Saturday afternoon.
Everton they emerged from the opening 45 minutes of their trip to the Vitality Stadium with a clean sheet almost entirely thanks to the fine form of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Too busy England the international denied the hosts on four separate occasions, making a particularly impressive stop to deny Justin Kluivert in a run-in with the Dutch forward.
Sean Dyche responded to a desperate first half by making two changes at the break, including just the third Premier League performance of 17-year-old midfielder Harrison Armstrong.
Ultimately, Pickford’s energetic determination could only last so long. Brooks was part of the triple change Andoni Iraola made as the game threatened to go into another goalless stalemate involving Everton. Within ten minutes of his arrival, the Welsh forward broke the game open, masterfully controlling a volley into the far corner that even Pickford couldn’t clear.
The defeat leaves Everton nervously looking over their shoulders at the relegation zone, just two points away. By comparison, Bournemouth have European qualification in their sights after maintaining their seventh-place finish.
