Oscar De La Hoya calls on Devin Haney to fire his father
Oscar De La Hoya blasted manager Bill Haney on this week’s episode of Clapback Thursdays, saying he ruined his son Devin Haney’s career by suing Ryan Garcia for injury after his loss last April in Brooklyn, New York.
Oscar: Fire your father, Devin!
De La Hoya says Devin needs to take control of his life and “fire” Bill. He thinks he ruined what was once a promising career for the former two-division world champion with his decision-making.
Oscar says the lawsuit and Devin’s decision to be inactive for the year made his loss even worse. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) could have bounced back from that loss by now if he had gotten back in the ring instead of sitting and dwelling on his loss.
According to De La Hoya, Haney must win the May 2 fight against Jose Ramirez to earn a rematch against Ryan in October.
If true, there will be a lot of pressure on Devin when he faces former WBC and WBO 140 lb champion Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) in a co-fight on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero in Times Square in New York.
“I feel sorry for Devin Haney because you rarely hear him speak because his dad does all the talking,” Oscar De La Hoya said during this week’s Clapback Thursdays. “Sure, Devin had a tough loss this year, but it shouldn’t have been the end of his career. It could have been easily fixed.
“If it wasn’t for his father and manager, Bill, who single-handedly turned it into a more toxic situation than Chernobyl. Never in my life have I seen a big piece of crap for a boxer’s career. All Devin had to do after losing to Ryan Garcia last April was say, ‘He beat me. I couldn’t block his left hook’ and then go back inside the hall.
“Instead of focusing on a comeback fight in 2024 and teaching his son to block left hooks, Bill thought it was a better idea for Devin to sue Ryan for battery and emotional distress, to sue Golden Boy, to sue the New York Athletic Commission. to get Devin’s loss expunged from the file, to fight civilians at the Orange Country State Fair, to take the rest of the year off, and to make as many enemies as possible. They cemented their legacy as the biggest crybaby in boxing history.
“Now, last week, Bill and Devin were in London, begging Turk for a payout because they have no other options. The only value Devin has in this sport is a rematch against Ryan Garcia. So Bill, being the pimp that he is, took his son out again to the fighter who beat him so badly he had to sue him for personal injury. I couldn’t make this s*** up, people.
“Revenge [Garcia-Haney] it will happen this October, but under one condition. The Haneys must drop their lawsuit against Ryan Garcia and Golden Boy. Of course, the Haneys are willing to give it up because they had no case. I’ve never heard of a fighter suing another fighter for battery and I’m sure we’ll never see it again unless Devin sues his next opponent.
Rematch next: Haney vs. Ramirez
“Anyway, taking a rematch is a pretty risky move because if Devin loses to Ryan again, we can all wave the Haneys goodbye. In order for Devin to get that fight, he has to fight tough and hungry Jose Ramirez in May. Take care, Jose. If you hit him too hard, he might sue you.
“Devin Haney, from one fighter to another, you have to take control of your life and career and fire your father. Everyone in the pit stood on the sidelines and watched what happened this year, the year you were supposed to shine. You are now the punchline. Everyone sees that he is a problem. He [Bill] he didn’t even stop the Ryan Garcia fight when your jaw was broken and you were on the canvas.
“I hope you come to your senses and decide to save yourself and part ways with your current manager before it’s too late. Unfortunately, it may already be,” De La Hoya said.
