Las Vegas police say the Cybertruck had large fuel containers and fireworks
The Tesla Cybertruck that exploded in front of Trump International Hotel Las Vegaskilling one person and injuring seven others, contained gasoline and fuel tanks, as well as large fireworks mortars, according to authorities.
Sheriff of Las Vegas Kevin McMahill said during a news conference Wednesday that investigators know who rented the Cybertruck, which was purchased in Colorado, although they are not ready to identify that person without 100% certainty.
McMahill also said investigators were able to track the truck through Tesla charging stations. Las Vegas license plate readers first detected the vehicle around 7:30 a.m., and McMahill said it traveled up and down Las Vegas Boulevard before entering the valet area of the Trump Hotel.
Within 15-20 seconds of reaching the hotel, the sheriff added, the vehicle exploded.

During the press conference, the sheriff showed video of the bed of the truck, which showed it was filled with gasoline canisters, camping fuel canisters and large fireworks mortars.
But the sheriff also pointed to the exterior of the truck and how it was still completely intact after the explosion.
“The fact that this is a Cybertruck really limited the damage that happened inside the valet because most of the blast went through the truck and out,” McMahill said. “In fact, if you look at that footage, you’ll see that the front glass door at the Trump Hotel wasn’t even shattered by the blast.”
Although the explosion did not damage the glass door, seven people suffered minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital.
As for all hotel guests, they have been accommodated by another hotel while the investigation into the explosion continues.
Like McMahill, Jeremy Schwartz, FBI special agent in charge in Las Vegas, would not identify the person in the vehicle, saying, “Our number one goal is to ensure proper identification of the subject involved in the incident.”
Another goal, Schwartz said, was to determine whether the explosion was an act of terrorism, which is being investigated by the Joint Terrorism Task Force.

The special agent said the task force is made up of law enforcement officers from the area.
“We don’t do anything together and we wouldn’t do anything on our own without our partners making sure we’re all aligned,” Schwartz said. “We have learned from the mistakes of the past and will not repeat them.”
The Cybertruck explosion was the second suspicious fatal incident in a major city since the beginning of 2025.

Early Wednesday morning, a man later identified as Shamsud Din Jabbar drove a pickup truck into a crowd on New Orleans’ famous Bourbon Street, killing more than a dozen people and injuring dozens more.
The truck Din Jabbar was driving was rented from peer-to-peer car rental company Turo, as was the Cybertruck that caught fire in Las Vegas. Dino Jabbar’s rental vehicle also placed an ISIS flag on its trailer hitch.
Schwartz said the FBI believes the Las Vegas explosion was an isolated incident.

McMahill said he doesn’t know if the two are related, but wouldn’t rule it out. He also said the Cybertruck did not have an ISIS flag like the truck in New Orleans, but that every aspect is being investigated.
The preliminary investigation up to this point included information from Tesla CEO Elon Muskwhich McMahill said provided a lot of information about how the vehicle was locked after it exploded due to the force of the blast.
Musk also helped out when it came to recording surveillance footage from Tesla charging stations around the country.

President Biden also commented on the explosion in Las Vegas.
“We are following the Cybertruck explosion outside the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas,” he said, referring to the fatal crash in New Orleans. “Police and the intelligence community are also investigating this, including whether there is a possible connection to the New Orleans attack. There is nothing to report on that outcome at this time.”
