Hezbollah demands Israeli forces withdraw from Lebanon on time | Israel attacked Lebanon News

Israel says the ceasefire agreement is not being implemented quickly enough.

Lebanon’s Hezbollah group has demanded that Israeli forces complete their withdrawal from the country’s south under the terms of a cease-fire deal agreed by the two sides, as the Israeli government said the deal was not being implemented quickly enough.

Israel and a group on Iran’s side agreed to a ceasefire brokered by France and the United States in November, ending more than a year fighting.

Under the deal, Israeli forces were to withdraw from Lebanon and Hezbollah forces from southern Lebanon within a 60-day period ending Monday.

“There have been positive developments where the Lebanese army and UNIFIL have taken the place of Hezbollah forces, as stated in the agreement,” Israeli government spokesman David Mencer told reporters on Thursday, referring to the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

“We have also made it clear that these moves have not been fast enough and that there is still a lot of work to be done,” he said, confirming that Israel wants the deal to continue.

Mencer did not directly answer questions about whether Israel had asked to extend the agreement or say whether Israeli forces would remain in Lebanon beyond the 60-day deadline.

Reporting from Beirut, Lebanon, Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr said Israel’s ambassador to the US said Israel was negotiating with President Donald Trump’s administration to convince the US to extend the deadline by at least another month.

“Israeli officials are talking about staying in Lebanon, which would be a violation of the ceasefire agreement to withdraw by January 26,” she said.

“Hezbollah hints that it will continue military action. He says that if Israeli soldiers stay, they will be an occupying force and there will be ‘resistance,’” Khodr noted.

“Whether these threats are serious – given that Hezbollah has been severely weakened during the Israeli war – is an open question,” she added.

Hezbollah said on Thursday that Israel must withdraw completely from Lebanon after the 60-day period of the ceasefire agreement expires and warned that any violation of the agreement will not be tolerated.

“We need the complete withdrawal of the Israeli army,” French President Emmanuel Macron said he said earlier this month, speaking alongside Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in Beirut.

The Lebanese government also told US mediators that Israel’s failure to pull out in time could complicate the deployment of the Lebanese army, a blow to diplomatic efforts and the upbeat atmosphere in Lebanon since Aoun was elected president on January 9.

Ali Fayyad, a Hezbollah lawmaker, said on January 20 that if Israel failed to withdraw, it would put all Lebanese in a new phase of “opposing the Israeli occupation with all possible means and tools to drive it out of our land.”
