WATCH: Lawmakers refuse to say how many genders there are when they face each other on Capitol Hill
WASHINGTON – Lawmakers refused to say how many genders there were when they faced each other just days later President Donald Trump declared that there are only two “immutable” sexes: male and female.
Former President Joe Biden refrained from defining gender as strictly binary and issued directives supporting recognition of individual gender identity in federal documents. This included allowing Americans to select “X” as the gender option on their passports, in addition to male and female. In contrast, Trump’s orderby declaring the existence of only two sexes, it will defeat efforts to allow the use of a gender other than the one assigned at birth on documents such as driver’s licenses.
In light of Trump’s order, Fox News Digital polled lawmakers on Capitol Hill about the number of gender-recognized members of Congress, but most members of Congress declined to answer the question.
“I have to go to a meeting, that’s all I’m worried about right now,” Rep. Sylvia Garcia of Texas told Fox when asked how many genders there are.
