Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has reiterated that he will not be leaving the club in January transfer window, stating that the Premier League leaders are ‘his club’.
The 21-year-old replaced injured Curtis Jones at the halfway mark of Liverpool’s Champions League clash against Lille on Wednesday, with the Reds leading one-nil thanks to Mohamed Salah’s 22nd goal of the season.
Jonathan David, one of Europe’s most prolific goalscorers and a regular in the transfer gossip column, equalized despite Lille being reduced to ten men, but Elliott was on hand to give Liverpool a seventh straight Champions League win as they qualified for the knockout rounds of the revamped competition.
Elliott’s future was in doubt earlier this month, amid reported interest from Brighton & Hove Albion and Borussia Dortmund, but he played down the story that he could leave Anfield in the build-up to Wednesday’s game even though he was on the fringes of Arne Slot’s squad.
And after his contribution to the win, Elliott doubled down on his stance and confirmed he won’t be walking away Liverpool anytime soon.
“I think it’s pretty clear to be honest … I’m not leaving. I said it in an interview the other day, this is my team,” Elliott said Amazon Prime. “This is my club, I’m a big fan and we’re in a great position this season. Without saying anything on social media… I haven’t really seen all the things, but these are just a few things my friends have told me and invited me to the top left , right and center asking if I’m going this way or this way.
“It’s always going to happen in January, especially after being out for a long time and not really playing as much as I would have liked. But that’s football.”
Elliott then revealed that he had scored the winning goal for Liverpool on Champions League the night at Anfield was one of his childhood dreams and he detailed how grateful he is to have the opportunity to play for the club he has supported since he was a boy.
“It’s hard to put into words. I’ve dreamed of playing in the Champions League all my life. Not just for my childhood club, but to play here at Anfield in front of our fans and score goals too,” he said.
“It’s pinching me at the moment. My family is in the stands as well. It’s an amazing feeling, but it’s over now. I just need to focus on the next few games, go to training tomorrow and make sure I do my best again.
“To be able to play on this team with not only amazing players, but amazing human beings with a great coaching staff and a great manager behind us. I feel like we’re in the best possible place to achieve great things together.”
