Fans go wild as Australia demolish India in Sydney Test to claim memorable 3-1 series win | Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Australia registered a commanding 3-1 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) series of victories over India with a comprehensive six-wicket victory in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). The triumph marked Australia’s first series win in the BGT since 2015, ending India’s run of dominance in the prestigious rivalry. The hosts put on an all-round masterclass, with a stellar batting performance and clinical bowling that devastated the visitors. India’s inability to withstand Australia’s relentless pressure highlighted the difference in execution and adaptability between the two sides
India’s first innings collapsed under Scott Boland’s masterclass
India’s batting woes started early when they were bowled out for a paltry 185 in their first innings. Scott Boland he led the Australian attack with figures of 4/31, extracting movement and bounce to trouble the Indian batsmen throughout the innings. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins he complemented him well, taking three and two wickets respectively. The top order failed to provide a solid foundation, with Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli falls cheaply. Rishabh Pant they fought back with a determined 40 off 98 balls, but a lack of partnership meant India could not capitalize on the few starts they had. The lower order crumbled under relentless pressure, leaving India on the back foot as Australia took control of the game early on.
India gain a slight lead thanks to the resilience of the bowlers
In reply, Australia managed to score 181, failed to take the lead but still came close thanks to some sharp batting Beau Webster. Webster top-scored with a collected 57 off 105 balls, displaying excellent technique against India’s disciplined bowling. Steve Smith he added a crucial 33 to stabilize the innings, but the rest of the line-up folded against it Mohammed Siraj (3/51) i Prasidh Krishna (3/42), who bowled with precision and discipline. Nitish Kumar Reddy also chipped in with two wickets, applying pressure in the middle of the over.

Rishabh Pant’s heroics in vain as Boland shines again
India’s second innings unfolded in a similar fashion to the first, with the top order crumbling due to Boland’s inspired spell. Boland’s incredible 6/41 decimated the Indian batting line-up as they were bowled out for just 157. While others struggled, Rishabh Pant counter-attacked brilliantly, smashing the ball with a 33-ball 61 studded with six boundaries and four sixes. His gutsy batting briefly raised hopes of a competitive total, but a lack of support from the other end meant India were unable to mount a challenging target. Australia’s bowlers, especially Boland, made perfect use of the conditions, leaving the Indian batsmen scrambling for answers.
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy returns to Australia
Chasing 162, Australia started confidently, with Usman Khawaja leading charge. Khawaja’s fluent 41 off 45 balls, along with Travis Head’s unbeaten 34, steadied the innings after early inroads by Krishna. Despite Krishna’s impressive figures of 3/65, the Australian’s aggressive approach kept them on track. Key partnerships at key moments helped the hosts deal with the pressure and by the end of the evening on Day 3 they had secured victory with six wickets in hand. With the momentum fully in their favor after Head was joined by Webster (39 not out), Australia wrapped up both the match and the series, leaving India to reflect on missed opportunities and constant batting struggles.

India lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy BGT to Australia by 1-3.
Had it not been for Jasprit Bumrah (and Yashasvi Jaiswal to some extent), they would have lost the series 0-5. pic.twitter.com/FeBNfDdotU

The Indian batsmen just didn’t score enough runs to challenge Australia, so 3-1 is a fair score. Lots of problems to solve. Form of senior batsmen, over reliance on Bumrah……

What an amazing series. This can only happen if you have two great teams challenging each other. Australia the better side during the series!! Key moments. Too bad it’s over

I have to feel for poor Jasprit Bumrah. He sits helplessly in white underwear in the SCG dressing room #AusvInd pic.twitter.com/QBnDGaCKZJ

Thanks to all my Indian fans who congratulated me for predicting a 3-1 Aussie Win series .. especially those who were very lively after India took a 1-0 lead .. 👍👍👍 #AUSvIND

Well done Pat Cummins!
He came up well with the bat under pressure at the MCG to give them the lead when it was 1-1 and at the SCG he also provided good support to Boland who was doing Boland things.
This was one series that this set of Aussies didn’t win, and now they’ve ticked that box too.
Cliché but…
