Barcelona confirmed a long-term contract with Ronaldo Araujo
Barcelona have confirmed that there is an agreement with Ronaldo Araujo on a new long-term contract with the club.
Araujo’s future has been uncertain for some time, with the Uruguayan heavily linked with Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Manchester United in recent seasons, with his previous contract set to expire in the summer of 2026.
The versatile defender was also potentially a salable asset at a time when Barcelona were desperate for a cash injection. But with the club now putting several years of financial problems behind them, Araujo’s value on the pitch outweighs his value on the market.
The new contract is for six years and will last until the end of the 2030/31 season. If he lives up to it, Araujo will have been a Barcelona player for over a decade when it’s over.
Thw player joined Barcelona from little-known Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, initially linking up with Atletico and becoming a first-team regular a few years later.
In 2023, Araujo became the third captain and was later promoted to vice-captain last summer when captain Sergi Roberto left the club.
A serious hamstring injury sustained during the Copa America, which required surgery at a specialist clinic in Finland, ruled Araujo out of the first half of this season. But he returned against Barbastro in the Copa del Rey, wearing the armband in Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s absence, and has since started against Real Madrid, Real Betis, Getafe and Benfica in four competitions.
