Amad Diallo turned down ‘two top clubs’ to extend Man Utd contract
Manchester United winger Amad Diallo has agreed a new long-term deal with the club, according to multiple reports.
Amad was a shining light in an otherwise difficult season for United, seizing the opportunity introduced to him by former interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy and continues to flourish under Ruben Amorim.
The contract with the 22-year-old Ivorian was due to expire at the end of this season, although the club retained the option to extend his contract for an additional 12 months.
But instead of triggering the option, United jumped straight to a new deal. ESPN reports that the terms of the five-and-a-half-year contract that will last until 2030 have been agreed.
Fabrizio Romano adds that the paperwork will be signed on Thursday and that Amad, who has the right to talk to other parties from January 1, has turned down “two top clubs” to stay at Old Trafford. This time there is no one-year option in the contract.
If he stays until the end of his contract, Amad will spend his peak years United colors. He will be 11 days short of his 28th birthday when it expires and will have been at the club for a decade in total, having joined from Atalanta as an unknown teenager in October 2020.
The player took little time to make his mark, making his debut for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team in February 2021 and scoring his first goal the following month. Loan spells at Rangers and Sunderland followed, the latter particularly successful, but a pre-season injury hampered his progress at Manchester in the first half of 2023/24.
By the end of last season, Amad made his way into the team under the leadership of Erik ten Hag and was a great player in this season’s Community Shieldbut he fell out of favor again and only after the departure of the Dutchman did he take the right step again
Amad has 13 goals and assists so far this season, with most of them coming since the beginning of November. He has started all but one of United’s last ten Premier League games and scored the equalizer that secured a priceless point against Liverpool last time out.
