Real Madrid is ‘changing the name’ of the famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium

Real Madrid are quietly changing the name of their famous Santiago Bernabeu stadium, according to a report.

Madrid named their current home after former player and president Santiago Bernabeu in 1955, eight years after the stadium opened, and earlier this year celebrated a major renovation of the stadium.

As he noted MARCHthe club is now changing the way it advertises the stadium and simply referred to its home as the ‘Bernabeu’, dropping the ‘Santiago’ from the name.

It was not done formally, but everything MadridCommercial businesses call the stadium just the Bernabeu. If the club leaders wanted to change the name of the stadium once and for all, they would have to go through the Shareholders’ Assembly.

Madrid are trying to turn the stadium, long known casually as the Bernabeu among English speakers, into a marketing hub capable of generating significant interest through events and sales, and are believed to have decided that a shorter stadium name would help their cause.

The stadium is still served by a metro station named after Santiago Bernabeu, who spent 35 years as president before his death in 1978 and is credited with laying the foundations for Madrid’s immense success over the past 70 years.
