“This morning I had the difficult task of informing Doug Pederson of my intention to hire a new head coach to lead the Jacksonville Jaguars,” Jaguars team owner Shad Khan said in a statement via ESPN. “Doug is an accomplished football player who will undoubtedly enjoy another chapter in his impressive NFL career, and I will be rooting for Doug and his wife Jeannie when that opportunity comes.

“As much as Doug and I would have liked his experience here in Jacksonville to have ended better, I have an obligation first and foremost to serve in the best interest of our team, and especially our fans, who loyally support our team and are overdue for an award. In that spirit, the time is to invite new leadership.”

Khan indicated that general manager Trent Baalke will remain in his role.

“I strongly believe that next season it is possible to bring back the winning environment that we had here not so long ago,” Khan added. “I will work with General Manager Trent Baalke and others within and close to our organization to hire a leader who shares my ambitions and is ready to take advantage of the extraordinary opportunity we will offer in Jacksonville.”

Pederson took over for Urban Meyer, who led a disastrous 2021 season that ended with him being fired before the end of the year.

The Super Bowl champion head coach took a season off after helping return the Philadelphia Eagles to the top of the NFL. He took over in 2022 and brought the Jaguars back to the playoffs, seemingly capitalizing on Trevor Lawrence’s potential.

Jacksonville came back to stun them Los Angeles Chargers in the AFC Wild Card round, then lost to the Kansas City Chiefs by just seven points.

The team also achieved a 9-8 record in 2023 and failed to enter the playoffs.

The 2024 season was derailed by injuries and missed opportunities. The Jaguars started the season 0-4, losing to the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns by less than a touchdown.

Lawrence suffered several injuries, forcing the team to start backup Mac Jones. The team never got into a rhythm and struggled.
