Cyclone Alfred: The Australian WPGA Championship in the European Tour was canceled as NRL, AFL, another sport that were delayed or moved | Golf news
The Australian WPGA Championship was canceled this week because of the incoming cyclone, the ladies of the European Tour (Let) and WPGA Tour of Australlasia confirmed.
The final event was supposed to start on Thursday at the Golf and Country Club in Queensland, Cove, Shrine, in Queensland, Live on Sky Sportsmarking the beginning of three consecutive events in Australia.
Cyclone Alfred is expected to make land in the region on Thursday or early on Friday, bringing extreme rain and strong winds, which has led to decide the tournament organizers to cancel the event.
In a statement, the tournament organizers said: “After extensive consultations with all stakeholders, the Australian WPGA Championships in the 2025 year and the Golf Festival of Golf were canceled due to the upcoming influence of Cyclone Alfred.
“After monitoring the weather forecasts and after dialogue with the Queensland government, the Gold Coast City Council, Mulph Group, Golf and Country Club Sanctuary and WPGA Tour of Austrasia, we made an unprecedented decision to cancel the tournament.
“With high -rainfall, extreme winds and expected floods, a decision was made to ensure the safety of players, staff, fans and all stakeholders, which is still a priority.”
The next event of the Ladies European Tour should now be an Australian women’s classic from March 13 to March 16, held at the Coffs Harbor Golf Club at New South Wales, on the Ford Women NSW Open next week.
