Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Arshdeep Singh are all set to make a comeback
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to announce India’s squad for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, which will be played in February and March. White ball specialists including Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh are likely to make the squad for the tournament.
India now shift their focus to the upcoming series against England and Champions Trophy 2025. The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will finalize the squads soon. The players selected for the Champions Trophy are also expected to feature in the ODI against England.
Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in the 2025 Champions Trophy
Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team and his deputy will be Jasprit Bumrah. The senior selection committee will meet soon to finalize the squads for the upcoming home series against England and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Ajit Agarkar, who was in Australia with the Test team, along with coach Gautam Gambhir, will start the talks on the white ball assignments. Teams must submit their provisional 15-man squads by January 12, with the possibility of changes by February 13, before the start of the tournament.
“All teams have to submit their provisional squads by January 12, but (can) make changes until February 13. It is up to the teams whether to announce the squad or not because the International Cricket Council (ICC) will only announce the submitted squads on February 13 “, the ICC official said.
The Champions Trophy-bound players are expected to feature in the three ODIs against England
According to a Times of India report, the Champions Trophy-bound players are expected to play in three ODIs against England before the tournament, with Jasprit Bumrah perhaps the only exception.
Team India’s last 50-over series was against Sri Lanka in August 2024, where senior players including Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were part of the playing line-up for the three-match series in Sri Lanka.
Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh are back for the Champions Trophy
The report added that key white-ball players like Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh will return to the team. This will create a selection dilemma for the commission due to the abundance of talent.
Shreyas Iyer has been in excellent form in domestic cricket, while Hardik Pandya has been impressive in T20Is and played three List A matches in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Baroda. Arshdeep Singh also played for Punjab in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer has been in exceptional form in domestic cricket. The 30-year-old recently scored his 14th List A century, the second of the 2024-25 VHT campaign in Mumbai. He started the tournament with an unbeaten 114 against Karnataka. He scored 325 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 131.57.
