The Villach Stab on Saturday marked what is believed to be the second deadly Islamic terrorist attack in Austria in recent years. In November 2020, a man who had previously tried to join the Islamic State took a rampage in Vienna, armed with an automatic rifle and a false explosive vest, killing four people before police shot him fatal. Last August Austrian authorities said the teenager in Vienna had prevented a planned attack at the Taylor Swift concert in Vienna, who also allegedly promised loyalty to IS.
