Coca-Cola may have to sell more drinks in plastic bottles in the US if President Donald Trump’s tariff eventually makes aluminum cans more expensive, said James Equincey CEO in an invitation with investors.
Comes after Trump has ordered a 25% import tax on all steel and aluminum that enter the US, which could end Raising the price of canned food And drink objects in the country.
In December, the drink giant reduced its aim of the sustainability of the use of 50% of recycled materials in its package by 2030, to use 35% to 40% to 2035.
The environmental groups marked Coca-Cola as “Top global plastic pollutant” six consecutive years.
“If one package suffers a certain increase in entry expenses, we still have other packaging offers that will allow us to compete in accessibility space,” Quincey said.
“For example, if aluminum cans become more expensive, we can put more emphasis on a pet [plastic] bottles. “
The Coca-Cola chief also sought to reduce the influence of the tariff on his job, saying that packaging was only a relatively small component of his company’s cost.
In recent years, Coca-Cola has sold more products in aluminum containers as part of its marketing and sustainability strategies.
Despite being generally more expensive, aluminum cans are also much more recycling than plastic bottles over time.
The US imports almost half of the aluminum that uses, according to the geological research of the United States, so that 25% of tariffs per all imports are likely to cause the cans to become even more expensive.
