Israel and Palestinians: Conflict history explained
Even before the last war between Israel and Hamas, Gaza had one of the highest unemployment rates in the world. Many lived below the poverty line and depending on the survival in food.
Gaza borders were made as a result of the war in the Middle East of 1948, when Egypt took it.
Egypt came from Gaza in the 1967 war, and the comic was occupied by Israel, who built settlements and set the Palestinian population of Gaza under military authority.
In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew its troops and immigrants from Gaza, although it retained control of the common border, airspace and coast, giving it an effective control over the movement of people and goods.
The UN still considers Gaza Israeli occupied territory because of the level of control that Israel has.
Hamas won the 2006 Palestinian elections and dropped his rivals from the territory after intense fighting next year.
Israel and Egypt have imposed a blockade in response, and Israel has controlled most of what was allowed on the territory.
In the years that followed, Hamas and Israel fought with several major conflicts – including those in 2008-09, 2012 and 2014. The great conflict between the two sides in May 2021 ended up in a tribute after 11 days.
Each round of fighting saw people killed on both sides, and the vast majority of them Palestinians in Gaza.
On October 7, 2023. Hamas Fighters launched an attack from Gaza, killing about 1,200 people in Israel and taking over 250 hostages.
